DAINA SHUKIS

DAINA SHUKIS

“An interesting departure from the standard presentation of serious music in club settings was the surprise entrance of dancer Daina Shukis toward the end of the set. Exuding sensuality, the dynamic Ms. Shukis, finger cymbals aloft, meshed beautifully with the ever-expanding spirals of musical agitation. My initial reaction... was soon reversed by the talent and sincerity of Ms. Shukis and the musicians. Again, Steig has dared to be different, to explore, to probe. DANCE OF THE SPIRITS

DAINA'S TRIBE

JAZZ DUETS

SMOOTH & JAZZY

DAINA AND THE TRIBE

Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2014 This album starts out with 3 exotic LIVE duets, the 1st from Cbgb's with singer/drummer Fred Alias and Daina Shukis- vocals /finger cymbals, interacting in a middle eastern style 1/4 tone voodoo chant summoning the spirits Dambala and Chango. This exciting performance also features Marvin Horne-guitar and Paul Ramsey-bass. Next the exceptional talent Judy Niemack backs up Daina at the club "Negril" on an odd time signature tune "Daughter of the Devil" both improvising playfully as Jeremy Steig, Jeff Young, Bill Washer, Chip Jackson and Kamal Zabir interact masterfully on this latin style beat. The third duet is "Sacrifice" an audio recording from the famous disco "Magique" NYC featuring Daina Shukis and Carolyn Coppola -vocals. Daina on finger cymbals presents an intense interpretation of an ancient ritual of human sacrifice depicting the high priests as profiteers. Later in the album Judy Niemack is presented scat singing during Daina and the Tribes LIVE performances in memorable vintage audio of her talent extaordinaire. Here is an array of performances all jazz enthusiasts will enjoy.” - Daina Shukis
